“Beat the Winter Blues” at Home Team BBQ Throughout February

February 16, 2016

Posted in Events, Food, Music

Share Post

Home Team BBQ is providing the perfect cure to “Beat the Winter Blues” throughout the month of February—with performances by amazing top blues musicians. The month celebration hits a crescendo on Saturday, February 27 at the annual All-star Blues Jam & Oyster Roast at West Ashley. Most shows start at 10:00pm and there is a $5 cover at the door. Patrons can come and hear some great live music at the various locations with the schedule as follows:

Sullivan’s Island

February 5:                    Cedric Burnside: Born and raised around Holly Springs, Mississippi, Cedric Burnside, grandson of legendary R.L. Burnside and son of drummer Calvin Jackson, has been playing music all his life. He has developed a relentless, highly rhythmic charged style with strong hip-hop and funk influences. This four-time winner of the prestigious Blues Music Award’s Drummer of the Year (2010-2014) is widely regarded as one of the best drummers in the world. http://cedricburnside.com/

February 6:                    Eric Culberson: Bandleader Eric Culberson has been playing music virtually all his life. Growing up in a family of musicians, he was drawn to his father’s acoustic guitar at the age of six—and before he’d even finished First Grade, had discovered a love for public performance: at a holiday party he entertained his classmates with a rendition of the Christmas classic “Silent Night,” and has never looked back. With guidance from friends and family, Culberson traced the artistic roots of his rock and roll heroes, and found himself immersed in the recordings and histories of such fabled guitar-slinging bluesmen as Son Seals, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters and—perhaps most notably—the three Kings: B.B., Albert and Freddy.

February 13:                  Liz Brasher: Liz Brasher is an Atlanta, GA based singer-songwriter who embodies the spirit and soul of the American South in her music. Born and raised in Charlotte, NC she was rooted from an early age in the fiber of the musical character that runs through the land. Like so many singers before her in the tradition of soulful Southern music, Liz got her start by singing in the church. Liz moved to Chicago where she began to write her own compositions. She drew on a myriad of sources to refine her characteristic blend of the old and new. Her introduction to the Blues would have a profound impact on her as a composer, singer, and guitar player. Blues paragons such as Son House, Leadbelly, and Muddy Waters can all be heard in her honest and soulful compositions. The influence of 1960’s R&B and Gospel giants Otis Redding, Mavis Staples, and Bill Withers can be found in any number of her performances. She cites Pops Staples’ simple yet powerful guitar playing style as a major source of inspiration on her own work. http://www.lizbrasher.com/

February 19:                  Balkun Brothers: Mixing traditional styles of delta and electric blues, with heavy modern rock and funk grooves, the Balkun Brothers are crafting a unique sound and style all their own. The band is fusing the past with the present and pushing the sonic bounds of blues into the future. Though the band’s sound is deeply rooted in blues tradition, Balkun Brothers draw from a vast range of influences. The band’s live shows and in-studio recordings seamlessly transition between blues, rock, funk, jam, psychedelia and everything in-between. Founding members Steve Balkun (guitar/vocals) and Nick “The Hammer” Balkun (drums/percussion/vocals) are gaining followers across the world with their gritty hard-rockin’ swagger. Balkun Brothers are becoming known for their explosive live shows and are quickly evolving into one of the United States’ premier blues-rock acts. http://balkunmusic.com/

February 20:                  Kaleigh Baker Blues Band: Originally from a small valley in Western New York, Kaleigh Baker has risen to prominence as a jazzy, blues-rock powerhouse. Her chill-inducing growl and ear-shattering range come drenched in Jack Daniel’s swagger: ‘Her vocals dip into a low and resounding molasses-slow croon with as much ease as they ascend to ceiling-skimming heights. Kaleigh Baker’s full length album “Weary Hours” will be officially released in October 2015. http://kaleighbaker.com/

February 26:                  Cool John Ferguson: Cool John Ferguson has been active on tent revival circuits, played with LaFace Records of Atlanta, GA, and collaborated with several well-known artists including Taj Mahal, Kenny Wayne Shepard, BB King, the Stylistics, Beverly Guitar Watkins, Captain Luke, and others. He’s been honored by Living Blues Magazine for two consecutive years as “Most Outstanding Guitarist.” He’s kept his feet in the juke joint tradition, playing a whole lot of Saturday nights at All Peoples Grill in north Durham, NC and other clubs in North Carolina, South Carolina, and surrounding states. http://cooljohnferguson.com/

West Ashley

February 27:                  All-star Blues Jam & Oyster Roast: Our annual All-star Blues Jam & Oyster Roast continues with the same core group of musicians as we started. Expect full sets from Tommy Thunderfoot and Skye Paige as well as the invitational jam featuring some of the Lowcountry’s best musicians like Whitt Algar and Jon Picard. All-U-Can-Eat Oysters are back for one day only for $15.

“We are longtime fans of the blues and proud to be committed to showcasing top artists throughout the year,” stated Tony McKie, Music and Entertainment Director. “It is important part of our music program and we look forward to having all of these performers come to the Lowcountry throughout the month of February.

To date, the organization has given over $300,000 to families in need.

On top of live music, public sampling and a party, Home Team BBQ and over 80 other teams will compete for the Louisiana Pork Champion title. Specifically Home Team BBQ will try for the whole hog, shoulder, ribs and a wild card “creative pork dish” categories. They will also be selling their award-winning smoked chicken wings and all of the money from the sales will be donated to Hogs for the Cause.

To prepare for the fundraising efforts, patrons of Home Team BBQ can add $1 or more to their bill or via a donation jar at check-out at both Home Team locations from now until March 24.  People can also go online at www.hogsforthecause.org/donate and enter team name “Home Team BBQ” to donate directly. And both restaurants are raffling off 2 sets of custom made William Knife Co. Edisto Oyster knives for $20 a ticket.  One winner from each restaurant will receive a set of the knives to be selected on Monday, March 24 (Valued at $600 per set).  All of the money will go towards the cause.
